#2 Organize room by room in your home and take inventory of what you own:
Rather than making a statement such as "I need to get
organized." say "Today I'm going to organize the junk
drawer in the kitchen." Focus on one small spot; you'll
accomplish something and not feel overwhelmed.
For example, you could begin with your medicines. Check the
expiration dates and discard old medicines. Take note of what
you need and don't need. Put like items together and store
those that you want to keep in an organized fashion.
Similarly, you might choose to organize your sock drawer. Get
rid of old socks and those that have no mates. Having a
drawer not so full may help you wear what you have, because you'll
be able to find them. Organizing a drawer can be done in
10-30 minutes. You can even fit this in during the busy
holiday season. Feeling good about one organized spot should
give you motivation to move on to another area, say an entire
closet.
If you are doing a closet, remove all your clothes. Spend some time creating new outfits by combining pieces that you already own in different ways. This will help you expand your wardrobe without having to buy anything new.
If you have a specific area where visible clutter is bothering you
to the point where you are depressed, you might begin with that
area. You will probably need at least a couple of hours to
sort through the clutter. Be tough on yourself and be willing to get rid of things you don't need or use. Have a box for items
that you can donate or sell. Items that are are broken, badly worn, etc. should be thrown away. Don't
save items thinking that you will repair them unless you are going
to do it NOW. Our homes are often filled with unfinished
projects for years; that only makes us feel bad. Put on your thinking cap and select a good place for everything that
you must keep or really want. You
should be in a much better frame of mind having dealt with
your visible clutter and will be motivated to move on to another
area in your home.
