System for filing monthly
bills
I have a few clients who pay their
bills at their workplace. They feel
this is convenient because they spend so much time at work or have
preschoolers at home. However, once the
bills were paid, chaos ensued. Records were all over the
place, with no system in place.
Here’s a simple plan which can
work for you no matter where you pay the bills. And, it
eliminates time-consuming filing! All you need is an
accordion folder, available at office supply stores and other
places. Most of these are divided into 13
sections.
Next time you pay bills, mark the
printed bill with the date you made the payment (if you don’t
have a printed bill, save a copy of your online payment).
Each month when you pay bills, put them in one section of the
folder, labeled by month. You can use the 13th
section for receipts you want to keep.
At the end of the 12-month period,
label the folder with the year (or July 2009-June 2010) and store
this folder (it doesn’t even have to be in a convenient
place). Continue for the next 12 months with a new accordion
folder.
